In class we have shared opinions on the ideas of robots taking the place of humans in certain service jobs. The idea did not sit well with most of us. However , saying that the concept of robotic service is relatively foreign to us I understand why we are so reluctant to the idea. Well , in March of this year Japan opened the doors to the world's first fully robot operated hotel. Literally everything is operated by robots. Everything from a humanoid robot front desk receptionist to a robot carrying your luggage to your room. When I saw the idea played out in real life it is not as scary as I thought it would be. In my head anything run by robots would most definitely eventually brainwash us all for total robot world domination. I feel like there are going to be more places that are going to be fully ran by robots in the near future. They will never call in sick to work, or have a bad attitude when exhibiting customer service , and you don't even have to tip them! So from a business standpoint they seem to be the next best thing to have! Trying to imagine what our world would be like if all our hotels, resturants, and daycares were fully operated by robots is becoming less of a science fiction novel and more of our reality. Since it is not what we are used to it will be harder for us to understand , and get used to. However , we have millions of people in later generations who will be perfectly fine functioning this way. As mentioned in class this past week, in recent years humans have been taught to act in more robotic ways , as far as school and the work place, it will be less and less of a big deal to the generations to come.

Barbie Girl in a Robot World
In class we have shared opinions on the ideas of robots taking the place of humans in certain service jobs. The idea did not sit well with most of us. I agree, I think later generations will not be able to imagine a life without robots.
ReplyDeleteDuring the summer, I read an article about the Japan's first robot hotel and I thought it was really cool. However, I could not help but think that those jobs could be done by people who really need it. I am concern that eventually robots will take away jobs from humans. some people are struggling to find jobs now so I do not want to picture how it will be in the future.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Baraka. A lot of the jobs that machines could be hired for are jobs that are usually taken by immigrants that don't qualify for higher jobs, or young students like us or younger that are trying to get into the work force. Sure, you could also hire people to manage those robots or make sure they're fit for the job, but wouldn't that require some technical or engineering skill? And wouldn't that defeat the purpose of having entry level jobs that can be done by immigrants and young people? Sure, having robots would be great for corporations, but I feel like it wouldn't contribute to social issues like the unemployment rate at all. This was also an issue raised in the show I mentioned last week, Humans.
ReplyDeleteA hotel run entirely by robots seems like a really cool thing to experience. I agree that it won't seem like that big of a deal to a lot of people, but I also don't agree with it. Like Baraka and Jumari said, the robots take jobs away from people in need. If we have robots to do these jobs, what will happen to all of the humans who are in need of the jobs? The employment of robots would inevitably cause our unemployment rate to drop. Could we live with the fact that our need for advancement had caused the value of our humanity to deteriorate? Is it moral for us to create robot workers when we know the result wil be an increase in jobless humans?
ReplyDeleteStephanie, I agree that it would be a great experience and to answer the questions that you raised... I believe that if robots keep infiltrating the workforce then humans will increasingly become a useless population so much so that we will no longer even be able to go to these places that use robots to function because so many humans will be out of work. I don't think these developers realize that our technological advancement is causing the need tor human intelligence to deteriorate. Developers are literally working themselves out of a job. I believe that it isn't morally right for us to create robot workers because of the effect that it has on humans. We as humans must work to live.
ReplyDeleteAs Stephanie previously stated, we humans must work to live, but I believe that after the work is done we also need our rest. This Japanese robot hotel sounds just like the place to unwind and relax. Just think about, instead of us carrying our luggage after a long trip, we have robots to carry it for us (lazy as it seems). Imagine that you are from out of the country and do not necessarily speak their language, the robots will be able to translate for you. No need to try to study their language because the robots will automatically be programmed to do so. They will be able to speak multiple languages.
