Virtual Vigilantes
The idea of virtual terrorism is pretty intimidating one when you think about it. There's so much that we do that depends on technology. We really do depend on the fact that technology will run effectively and without error. When street lights don't behave the way that they're supposed to on a daily basis because of some regular issue people react badly. And that's only one street, or one block! Thinking about everything else that someone could do on a massive scale is incredibly jarring and terrifying. That this sort of chaos can be started with one malicious person's tweaking is kind of scary. I can definitely see how it can be used for evil. I do think that these same tactics can be used for good. I suppose I see people who manipulate technology in order to enact some form of justice the same way that I see Batman or Robin Hood. They're sort of vigilantes, yes they work outside the law and the ability they have to do so could be bad in someone else's hands but instead they're trying to help people out. Plus, a vigilante usually tries to push their own justice because of the legal system's inability to do the same. I think that we should consider that if there wasn't something wrong with our system people wouldn't step forward to fix it. Yes what they're doing is technically illegal, but it's not a bad thing to do. There's a big difference between committing a crime for the sake of committing a crime and doing it for the people. I think that we sort of need people to do this in order to bring attention to the wrongs in our world. At least until we manage to change so that we don't need their aid anymore.

I like the term "virtual vigilantes" and after reading your blog post it makes me wonder... What keeps these people from being a vigilante more often? I think eventually virtual vigilantes will be the leaders of the "new revolutions." In addition to that I think this surge of virtual vigilantes will be part of the difficulty of sustaining revolutions. I'm torn because I think that because part of being a virtual vigilante might cross over into your work it will be harder to get people to subscribe to being a vigilante. What do you think? Do you think that being a virtual vigilante is terrorism?
ReplyDeleteI'm not sure if I can agree with the Robin Hood theory. I agree when it comes to helping the poor to buy food and clothing.. but when it comes to highly classified information, I can't see it as a right of all people to know all. If one thinks this... then they must believe in 100% transparency? I'm not completely convinced, myself, but this is the way I am lending.

ReplyDeleteI agree with your post. I personally find it extremely scary that people can/could manipulate technology so easily. All it takes is for the wrong individual to obtain that power and we have something unstoppable on our hands. Despite this, I do believe that the manipulation of technology doesn't always have to be considered "bad" or "evil". One example we talked about in class was the "anonymous" group. This group is manipulating technology to unmask the members of a very distasteful group so that these individuals can no longer threaten innocent people due to personal beliefs/skin color or do their dirty work in disguise. Surely this is not a evil thing for the anonymous group to do right?? I liked your Robin hood example and how you said these types of characters wouldn't have to take justice into their own hands if it were served correctly. I feel this is the case today and with groups such as anonymous. If someone had stepped in a long time ago to stop the KKK, citizens would not have to take matters into their own hands in the first place! We definitely NEED groups such as anonymous to act as catalysts for change because clearly others in our society aren't concerned about ridding our environments of such negativity.
ReplyDeleteI agree with you, but to an extent. Half of me feels that it is a good thing for groups such as anonymous to expose people who are harming or discriminating against people. However, I think that exposing the members of the KKK could be dangerous. There are so many social media websites that it would not be hard to find those peoples information. People who are against the KKK could try to find them and harm them in some way. Maybe I am thinking too much on this, but it probably could start a race war or something because if something happens to one of their members, they might try to retaliate and then it will end up being a big mess!! Hopefully, everyone will just publically shame them, instead of resorting to violence.
ReplyDeleteI completely agree! Also, the traffic light example just made me realize that a terrorist doesn't have to do anything to "harmful" to alter the internet, I think people would go crazy if someone just shut down the internet.
