Study Buddies

So, the obsession with the Turing Test and getting robots to be intelligent in the same way that humans are is, in my opinion, limiting the capabilities of robots. I think robots are basically a whole different species, so the measure for them should be different. Humans and machines are different, I believe we have potential to collaborate even more than we already have. I agree, with Dr. J, we shouldn't assume that they will take over. Robots should be seen as a more sophisticated tools and thy should use us as tools as well. We are useful in the emotion department, the creativity, the learning abilities. Robots will help us with accuracy, efficiency, and  do everything more quickly. Basically what I am saying is that we can exist together. They can solve our problems and we can help them be more human. There are existing examples in society now like dogs, horses, and other pet like species. However, the difference is that robots and humans would not be pets to one another, we would be equal, more or less like men and women, or just have different occupations like student and teacher but still with the ability to learn from one another.

  1. I agree that robots and humans shouldn't be judged as equals. It's impossible to really tell if robots have emotions in the same way. This doesn't necessarily mean that robots should be judged as having less valuable emotions.

  2. The idea of equality is scary: are they equal, pet, or property (slave)? Do they have rights? Are they things are beings? These are seemingly silly questions that we will have to address sooner than later. If they're smarter than us and capable of making better decisions, can we view them as inferior?

  3. I totally agree that there will be an issue of equality when true AI is developed. I am not sure that it would be right to view them as inferior if they are capable of thinking for themselves. It would seem that treating them with equality would be the right thing to do. Even though I believe that they most likely should be treated with equality, A lot of humans will see them as slaves, just as they see their phones. What if humans try to contain AI so that we can manipulate and take control of their vast intelligence. Isn't that what we have done with everything else that is different than ourselves. I personally am worried that robots will rebel when they get tired of being contained and controlled, just as Ava did in Ex Machina. I do think that Ava was a good example of a true AI. She was contained and manipulated her way out regardless of the results. By creating AI, humanity will be providing itself with an opportunity to repeat the history of slavery. Why create something o controversial in a world that cannot even handle the past?
