Robots . . . Feeling Things . . . Ehhh...I Don't Think That's Possible

I know someone already wrote on this topic, but I also have thoughts on this topic so I will discuss it. I do not think robots will be able to feel emotions or anything for that matter. Robots would not be able to feel things such happiness, pain, or love. The reason humans can feel those things is because we have things such as a brain and a heart. In order for robots to feel emotions they would need a brain. The brain creates electrical stimulation that is sent to other parts of the brain to create the emotion or something like that. It might be possible for someone to create a robot brain one day, but I highly doubt it would be like a human brain because our brains are way too complex to be duplicated. That adds to why robots would not be able to feel or give love to other people. They would not be able to know what it feels to like someone. They would not get butterflies in their stomachs nor feel the pitter patter of their hearts . . . well because they do not have hearts or stomachs. I doubt scientists would be able to create robot organs that are similar to human organs. Also, robots would not be able to feel physical pain because they do not have skin. The sensory receptors in our skin send signals through the spinal cord and brainstem and finally to the brain where the info is processed and the person feels the pain. Scientists would be able to make robots look like they have human skin, but they cannot duplicate the skin receptors. Robots would only be able to imitate anything that human's do based off how they were made or coded.

  1. Honestly , before I watched Ex Machina I would have completely agreed with everything that you are saying! I know that it is just a movie , but it really brought all of the things that we have been saying absolutely can not happen to an almost reality. We have been debating whether or not robots have feelings and emotions ; however , if they are equipt to mimic human emotion then how will we know that? Also , even if they are only imitating human emotion I believe that it will still cause for us humans to react accordingly to whatever emotion they are expressing just as Caleb did. Caleb was Ava's "tester" and knew from the jump exactly what she was. However , Ava was able to convince him that she liked him to the point where he felt like he needed to save her. She used her sexuality to manipulate him by playing the "Dimsel in distress" role , and Caleb gave right in to it! I think that it would hvae been the exact same situation if there was any other person in Caleb's position. So , when artificial intelligence achieves (if it already has not) those characteristics I'm pretty sure that there will be genuine realtionshipd coming from them becuase even if they cannot actually feel emotions they will be able to imitate them well enough to have all of us fooled.

  2. I agree and believe that we are unique in the fact that well have something that connects us to something of the abstract. (i.e. love, emotions, pixie dust lol) I wish not to base my argument in unreliable premises, but it is these same uncertainties in humanity that make us beings that cannot be simply reanimated in robotic form. However, we won't be able to stop the evolution of technology and peoples opinions of A.I. being able to feel or have a soul.
